PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic document feeder for reading both sides of an original that controls the carrying of the original so that no expansion/ contraction difference takes place between read image data of one side and the other side of the original and the size of the read image data is in matching with the size of the original image. SOLUTION: The automatic document feeder is provided with; a paper feed tray on which originals are placed; a paper separation/feed means for separating one by one originals on the paper feed tray and feeding the separated original; an inversion means for inverting the front side/rear side of the original passing on a platen and again feeding the original to the carrying means; a drive means for driving the carrying means; and a control means for controlling each means above: The control means sets a first drive speed to the drive means for carrying the one side of the original fed from the paper separation/feed means onto the platen and a second drive speed different from the first drive speed to the drive means for carrying the other side of the original fed from the inversion means onto the platen.
