PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reproducing method capable of obtaining a high reproduction output and also performing accurate reproduction in reproducing a pit or a record mark having dimensions in the vicinity of a resolution limit determined by the diffraction theory or dimensions fall below the resolution limit, and a device used for the reproducing method. SOLUTION: This method for reproducing an optical information medium scans a mark string with laser beams with respect to an optical information medium having an information recording layer on which a mark string formed in such a manner that marks and spaces are arranged and reads out the mark string on the basis of a light quantity change pattern of reflected laser beams. When the magnitude of an angle formed between the polarization component contained in laser beams reflected at the mark string and the mark string is defined as θ, the polarization component in which θ is 0 deg. is called x0 component, and the polarization component in which θ is 90 deg. is called y0 component, the method utilizes at least liquid quantity change in the x0 component to read out the mark string.
