PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a starting method for a variable speed frequency converter, formed by coaxially and directly coupling two variable speed generator-motors together, wherein the width of variable speed is not exceeded, when the variable speed frequency converter is started, an exciter of large capacity is dispensed with, and power interchange is performed easily and smoothly in a simple way. SOLUTION: The first variable speed generator-motor of the two variable speed generator-motors coupled directly is started first, and the rotational speed thereof is increased to a specified value or above. Then, the rotor of the second variable speed generator-motor is excited and controlled, and the second variable speed generator-motor is connected in parallel with a second power system so that the phase, frequency, and magnitude of the stator-side voltage are made to match with the system in parallel. Then, the rotor of the first generator- motor is demagnetized, and the stator current is reduced to near zero. Thereafter, normal exciting current is applied, and the phase, frequency, and magnitude of control stator-side voltage are made to match with a first power system. Then, the first generator-motor is connected, in parallel with the first system.
