PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem occurring when a large-sized optical sensor is employed. SOLUTION: A vertical drive pulse generating circuit 6 sequentially supplies three vertical drive pulses to a vertical electric charge transfer register 108 to transfer signal electric charges by 3 packets and supplies the electric charges to a horizontal electric charge transfer register 4. In this case, a horizontal drive pulse generating circuit 10 supplies a horizontal drive pulse to the horizontal electric charge transfer register 4 after initial transfer of two times to allow the signal electric charges latched by the horizontal electric charge transfer register 4 to an output 22 by one packet. Thus, packets 8A, 8B, 8C sequentially store signal electric charges produced by optical sensors 116 by three lines. The horizontal drive pulse generating circuit 10 in this state outputs a drive pulse to allow the horizontal electric charge transfer register 4 to transfer the signal electric charges thereby outputting all the signal electric charges. Repeating the processing above allows the horizontal electric charge transfer register 4 to output the signal electric charges produced by all the optical sensors 116.
