The tracking is performed by a portable device (10) incorporating a GPS receiver and a memory to record periodically blocks of data. The data blocks include a block identifier, date and time of recording, information on location provided by GPS receiver and an identifier of the mode of travel. The contents of memory can be remotely transferred to a server.
