PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow a provider to execute the maintenance work of a data base even during the time when a multi-media contents distributing system is providing a download service to a client on a network. SOLUTION: At the time of receiving a processing request from a client PC 2 or a provider PC 3, an HTTPD and CGI1 or CGI2 judge which of the client PC 2 and the provider PC 3 has issued the processing request. In the case of the client PC 2, the retrieval of contents stored in an IMGS is executed by referring to a table in a CDB, and in the case of the provider PC 3, the retrieval or maintenance of the contents is executed by referring to a table in an MDB. Thus, it is possible to prevent the interruption of any service to the client by using those different tables. Also, those tables are synchronized at need by an SYNC.
