PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a larger sound absorption effect without disturbing miniaturization and shortness in height in a surface acoustic wave device. SOLUTION: This surface acoustic wave device is provided with a piezoelectric substrate 11, interdigital transducer (IDT) type electrodes 12 provided on the principal surface of the piezoelectric substrate 11 and sound absorption members 13 provided so as to stand in line with the IDT type electrodes 12. The sound absorption member 13 has a part wider than the lowest part at a position other than the lowest part when seen with respect to a cross section perpendicular to the principal surface. As a result, a cross section becomes, for example, a reverse tapered shape or a barrel shape. Preferably, the sound absorption members are made mainly of a photosensitive resin. More preferably, the sound absorption member 13 has a shape where the relation between the width (a) of the lowest part and maximum width (b) is b/a>=1.1 when seen with respect to the cross section.
