PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress image defects such as a vertical line and a ghost in an active matrix type display device adopting a split sample hold mode. SOLUTION: A horizontal drive circuit 17 successively generates a sampling pulse which is not overlapped to sampling switches 23 connected to the same video line 25 successively generates an overlapped sampling pulse to adjacent sampling switches 23, drives each switch, and successively writes a video signal on the pixel 11 of a selected row. A clock generating circuit 18 generates a clock signal HCK used as the operating reference of the horizontal drive circuit 17, and a clock signal 2HCK having a time period and a pulse width of two times as large as the HCK. The horizontal drive circuit 17 has shift registers 21 which carry out a shift action synchronizing with the HCK and successively output a shift pulse from each shift stage S/R, and a sampling switch group 22 which samples the 2HCK in response to the shift pulse and successively generates a sampling pulse.
