PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method (200) and a system (100) for detecting defects in a recordable storage medium. SOLUTION: This method comprises a step (212) for accessing a segment of multimedia data recorded onto a first portion of the storage medium, a step for selectively examining the segment for confirming whether a defect is contained in the first portion or not and a step for taking corrective measures when a defect is detected. The corrective measures are one or more of the corrective measures selected from the group including; generating a defect message; storing the address of the first portion of the storage medium in a table; writing the segment of the multimedia data onto a second portion of the storage medium; or modifying the step for selective examination.
