PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup device that satisfies a requirement that even a remote place can obtain a bright and sharp display image in the case that an electronic endoscope picks up an image of an observed position to display the image on a monitor. SOLUTION: When a CCD 27 of the imaging apparatus applies imaging exposure to the observed position, a CCD drive circuit 28 applies drive control to the CCD 27 to generate first and second imaging video signals with different exposure periods within one field, applies video signal processing to the first and second imaging video signals, compression circuits 34, 38 convert the video signals into first and second digital compression image data, and a data superimposing circuit 39 converts the first and second digital compression image data into multiplexed signals, which are transmitted to the monitor for displaying the imaging image of the observed position.
