PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a disc type determining apparatus and a method for determining whether a disc is a deflection disc, an eccentric disc or a mass eccentric disc. SOLUTION: This disc type determining apparatus includes an error gain adjusting means for adjusting the amplitude of a focus and a tracking error to be constant, a loop gain adjusting means for comparing a closed loop phase of the focus and a tracking loop with a predetermined closed loop reference phase to adjust the gain of the focus and the tracking loop to be constant, a vibration quantity measuring means for measuring vibration quantity on the basis of an adjusted error and an output of a controller for controlling the focus and tracking of a disc compensated due to an error, and a disc type determining means for obtaining a predetermined signal for determining the disc type according to the measured vibration quantity, and measuring deflection quantity, eccentricity quantity and mass eccentricity quantity to determine whether a disc is a deflection disc, an eccentric disc or a mass eccentric disc.
