The method involves defining the position (Vx;V1y-V5y) of at least one virtual activity area (V1-V5) on the display- and operating-unit, and associating it with at least one action. The position of an average activity area (Gkab ; GQT1-GQT5) is determined by geometrically combining the position (Qx,ay ; Qx,Qy) of the first real activity area (Ka ; KQ) and the position (KTx;by ; KTx;K1y-K5y) of a second real activity area (Kb; KT1-KT5). A check is made to determine if the position of the average activity area agrees with the position of the virtual activity area (V1-V5). The action is activated if the positions agree. Independent claims are also included for the use of the method to operate a technical device; for an analog touch-screen; for an HMI apparatus; for an automation system; and for a computer program product.
