In detecting engine loads including accelerated condition and intake air quantity from intake pressure, an intake pressure signal for accurate detection thereof is treated. A low pass treatment using a low-pass filter is applied to an intake pressure signal detected by an intake pressure sensor 15. The cut-off frequency of the low-pass filter is not more than a frequency that corresponds to a wave length equal to four times the length of a connecting pipe 23 leading to the intake pressure sensor 15 and that is not less than an intake valve driving frequency, thereby eliminating electrical noise and air-column vibration produced in the connecting pipe 23, obtaining a smooth real change in intake pressure corresponding to the stroke.
