A composite sheet substance having similar properties to leather composed of numerous bundles of fine fibres or filaments A surrounded by an elastic substance D is produced by (1) binding a bundle of the filaments A with a bonding agent B which has different dissolving properties to that of A. The bonded fibrous material thus formed is converted into a sheet by e.g. carding, cross lapping, random webbing, needle punching, stitching, direct sheeting etc. (2) dissolving out by B by a solvent which is a non-solvent for A (3) coating with a polymer C (4) impregnating with an elastic polymer D (5) dissolving out C by a solvent which is a non-solvent for A and D. The sequence of steps (2) and (3) may be reversed. Step (4) may be carried out by dipping the sheet of material to be impregnated into a solution of the elastic polymer D or spraying a solution of D onto the sheet. The fibres A may be of nylon, polyethylene terephthalate, polyester, polyethylene-oxide, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyurethane or a vinyl polymer and more than one type of fibre may be present in the bundles. The elastic polymer D may be polychloroprene rubber, styrene-butadiene rubber, nitrile-butadiene rubber, polyurethane, polyvinyl chloride and other synthetic rubbers or natural rubber. |
