A gas generator (17) is positioned beside the unfolding axis of the airbag (19). The airbag parcels are positioned in the housing so that the first parcel (20) is located near the housing opening (14), and the second one (21) is located axially behind it. The inner fold layer (23) containing the airbag opening (22), which encloses the gas exit (18), is positioned, so that the layer section forming part of the first fold parcel is charged by the gas in a direction towards the housing opening, and the layer section forming part of the second parcel is charged in direction of housing base (12).
