INTERFACE FOR POSITION DETERMINING DEVICE

An encoder comprises a scale (11) and a readhead (10) which runs along it. The readhead is connected to an in-line interface (12). During a set-up procedure, a flying cable set-up device (22) is temporarily interposed between the readhead and the interface. The interface generates correction values, e.g. for the gain and DC offsets, when the readhead is run along the scale during the set-up procedure. An indicator (66) shows when valid correction values are present. On seeing this, a push-button (70) on the set-up device is pressed in order to store the correction values in a memory in the interface.
