It is intended to provide an agent controlling the production of an osteoclast formation regulator and a method of screening a substance capable of controlling the production of an osteoclast formation regulator. Namely, an agent controlling the production of an osteoclast formation regulator which contains a carbohydrate as the active ingredient and a method of screening a substance capable of controlling the production of an osteoclast formation regulator which comprises culturing an established cell line capable of producing the osteoclast formation regulator in a nutrient medium, adding a test substance thereto, further culturing the established cell line in the presence of the test substance, then quantifying the osteoclast formation regulator released into the culture supernatant, comparing the obtained value with a control level, and judging the test substance as being capable of controlling the production of the osteoclast formation regulator in case where the measurement value is lower or higher than the control level.
