A novel norbornene derivative represented by the following general formula (1m). The norbornene derivative is subjected to ring-opening polymerization or subjected to ring-opening polymerization and subsequently to hydrogenation. Thus, a ring-opening polymerization polymer or a product of hydrogenation thereof can be obtained which can especially have significantly reduced birefringence.
