The appliance has a base (10) and a bench (12), pivoted via a foot/leg-operated appliance. This has a pillar (18), with a first end born on the base pivoted via a hinge pin (30), and a second end held via e.g. a roller (19) on an end section of the bench so as to move to and fro. Foot and/or leg operation causes parts connected to the pillar to move the second pillar, and to raise the end section of the bench. The operating appliance has a foot/leg-operated lever (20), and esp. a joint rod (22) between lever and pillar.
