A photocatalytic material which can selectively inactivate a specific biologically harmful substance by its photocatalytic action and a method of using the same. The above-described photocatalytic material 21 comprises a photocatalyst 23 and a holder substance 26 having a holding member 17 capable of selectively holding the specific biologically harmful substance. The holding substance 26 is fixed to at least a part of the surface of the photocatalyst 23. This photocatalytic material 21 is designed so that substantially the whole holder substance 26 is located on the surface of the photocatalyst in such a state as allowing the holding material to specifically hold the specific biologically harmful substance at the holding member 17.
