The invention relates to an asynchronous frame receiver, said frames beginning with a break character comprising a determined number of bits having the same value. The inventive device comprises means enabling hot connection to an asynchronous data bus. According to the invention, the receiver comprises: break character detection means (SM, FWM); and means of (i) quitting an initial idle state (IDLE) when a break character has been detected and (ii) switching to at least one operating mode (SWM, TWM) in which the determined characters of an asynchronous frame can be detected by the frame receiver. The invention is particularly suitable for use in UART-type circuits which are disposed in microcontrollers.
