The present invention is based on the finding that 6-O-acyl-beta-D-glucosyl-beta-sitosterols extracted from fig latex were effective in inhibiting cell proliferation and thus may be used as anti-proliferative agents for the treatment of various diseases and disorders which correlate with undesired proliferation of cells, including cancer. Thus, the present invention provides such compounds, compositions comprising said compounds and methods ofuse of the compounds for inhibiting undesired proliferation of cells. The compounds of the present invention arepreferably formulated for oral delivery, e.g. as a food additive.
