The device has a valve lifter (3), which is moved in a crank (2) by a cam shaft (1) via a roller (12), and which has a second roller (13) moving along an adjustable rail (8). The lever has a working cam working with a valve actuator (5), and is loaded by a spring (7). In engines with two intake valves (6), the two levers are born on a common shaft and positioned by two rails so that the valves execute two different movements. Rails and working cam are shaped so that max. acceleration of the intake valves increases with decreasing valve stroke. The opening period of the valves shortens with decreasing stroke. The crank is of steel, sintered steel, cast steel, gray cast iron, or titanium.
