A surgical instrument (10) having an upper and a lower blade member (12, 13, respectively), each of the members having a main generally elongated blade portion, each of the members having space upstanding lateral sidewalls (15, 16), the upper blade member (12) being vertically, movable with respect to the lower blade member (13) to selectively open and close the spacing between the blade members. A light cone (100) may be provided in the upper blade member (12) for connection of an illuminated device for providing light to the surgeon's work area. A port (33) may also be provided in the upper blade member (12) for connecting a suction tube thereto for removing fluid and the like during use of the instrument.
