[Also in Group XXVIII] In apparatus for preheating cement raw materials and feeding them into a rotary furnace of the type which comprises a number of cyclone separators disposed in series so that waste gases from the furnace pass in succession therethrough, the dust discharge pipe of each separator, with the exception of the first one, being connected with the waste gas duct leading to the previous separator, the dust discharge pipe of the first separator leading directly into the furnace, and the raw materials being fed into the waste gas duct between the last and the penultimate separator, the waste gas ducts 6, 9, 15 and 17 are of rectangular, preferably square, cross-section. Cleaning openings 19, 20 which widen conically towards the centre of the duct are formed in the refractory wall 18 near the corners and are provided with readily removable covers. By this arrangement, a triangular sur. face of duct wall may be swept by a rod introduced through one of the openings to dislodge adhering charge particles. The openings are so spaced that contiguous swept triangles cover the whole inside surface of the walls, Fig. 2 (not shown). The transition from circular openings in the top wall 22 of each separator 1, 2 or 3 is effected by cylindrical tube sockets 21 whose refractory lining is shaped to take up the rectangular cross-section of the waste gas ducts.
