PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hologram grating element which can be used as a polarization separation element having a high contrast ratio and to provide a method for manufacturing the element. SOLUTION: The hologram grating element 1 has optically anisotropic patterns 3 arranged in a specified period, and each pattern 3 consists of a single phase in which a liquid crystal core part 7 (molecular structure part showing the liquid crystal phase) is aligned in one direction. An isotropic material layer 5 made of an optically isotropic material is disposed between the patterns 3.
