PURPOSE: A method for estimating an initial state of charge(SOC) is provided to lengthen the useful life of the battery, while shortening development time and reducing costs. CONSTITUTION: A method comprises a first step(110) of setting a map table to an SOC of discharge no-load voltage; a second step(120) of mapping the SOC obtained from application to an open circuit voltage(OCV) map to a battery average voltage; a third step(130) of judging whether the SOC is lower than 20%; a fourth step(140) of judging whether the SOC is lower than the SOC of the memory of the previous battery controller, if it is judged in the third step that the SOC is lower than 20%; and a fifth step(150) of modifying the SOC of the memory of the previous battery controller to an initial SOC by OCV, if it is judged in the fourth step that the SOC is not lower than the SOC of the memory of the previous battery controller.
