PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive propelling pencil extremely shortening a residual lead becoming impossible to write to eliminate waste and capable of performing smooth writing without generating hitching even if a paper surface is rubbed with the front end of a slider. SOLUTION: In the propelling pencil holding a lead by the forward and rearward movement of the chuck arranged at the front of a barrel to deliver the lead, a holding chuck is provided toward the almost front end of the inner hole part of the slider fitted and inserted in the inner hole of the mouth tip part provided at the front end of the barrel in such a state that the leading end thereof is projected from the front end of the mouth tip part. When the front end of the slider retreats to the front end of the mouth tip part, the rear part of the slider is locked with the inner peripheral surface of the mouth tip part and, with respect to the interval generated when the chuck retreats during a period from the start of the grasping of the lead by the locking of the chuck with a clamp to the completion of the grasping of the lead, the interval immediately before the rear part of the slider starts the locking with the inner peripheral surface of the mouth tip part after the retreat of the slider from the most advance position is set to almost twice or more.
