PURPOSE: A subscriber board protecting method of an exchange is provided to inform a manager about an abnormal condition of a subscriber board by monitoring a state of a hook-off check signal of the subscriber board, automatically testing a line, reporting the test result and cutting off the line. CONSTITUTION: In an initial hook-on state(S401), if an overcurrent flows to a line, it the line is hooked off. The hook-off-state is checked(S402). A system program transfers a send digit message and a dial tone to a subscriber, and at the same time as it turns to a digit monitoring state, a timer is registered(S403). It is checked whether the timer reaches a pre-set termination time(S404). If the timer is not terminated yet, a digit message inputted from a subscriber board is monitored, and then, it is checked whether the digit message has been completely received(S405). If the digit message has not been completely received, it is checked whether the timer has been terminated. If the timer has been terminated, it is checked whether it's a hook-off-state(S408). If it's the hook-off-state, the subscriber board is considered in an abnormal state and a line testing, a test result reporting and a line cutting-off are performed(S409).
