PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a lubricating oil composition imparting effective cylinder liner protection in a cylinder region susceptible to corrosive abrasion. SOLUTION: This lubricating oil composition for residual fuel-oil fuelled diesel engines for ships or heavy stationary applications comprises (a) a large amount of an oil having a lubricating viscosity and (b) a small amount of an oil-soluble or an oil-dispersible molybdenum compound and has 20-100 total base number (TBN) measured according to ASTM D-2896 and 9-30 mm<2> s<-1> viscosity at 100 deg.C measured according to ASTM D-445.
