PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that in an idle operating range, an intake valve lift characteristic is liable to fluctuation depending on engine temperature, and an intake air quantity corresponding to a request is hard to supply. SOLUTION: A first variable valve system can continuously vary intake valve lift characteristics including an operating angle depending on a rotational angle of a control shaft. In a non-idle operating range, the rotational angle of the control shaft is controlled depending on engine speed and accelerator travel (S2, S3). In an idle operating range, the rotational angle of the control shaft is controlled depending on a deviation of an actual engine speed from a reference idle speed (S5, S6). Just after a transition from the non-idle operating range to the idle range, a reference idle rotational angle of the control shaft corresponding to the reference idle speed is corrected depending on engine temperature (S7, S8).
