PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To implement operation of the nip state or release state between a sheet conveying drive and a sheet with a simple mechanism when the sheet is delivered in sequence and to provide a sheet feeder capable of feeding at high speed. SOLUTION: The sheet feeder is provided with a separation means 41 comprised of a feed roller 40 provided in a sheet feeding path and a separation member pressed against the feed roller, a pair of relay rollers disposed in the downstream of the feeding path, a first press contacting/separating means rotating the feed roller in the feeding direction by forward direction rotation and making the feed roller and the separation member the nip state or the release state by reverse direction rotation, and a second press contacting/separating means rotating the pair of relay rollers in the conveying direction by forward direction rotation and making the pair of relay rollers the nip state or the release state by reverse direction rotation. A first drive means rotates reversely to make the feed roller and the separation member the release state after the end of sheet reaches the pair of relay rollers and a second drive means changes from forward to reverse direction rotation to make the pair of relay rollers the release state after the end of sheet reaches the prescribed point on the downstream side.
