PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for automatically controlling luminance of an image sensor are provided to obtain the accurate mean luminance and find luminance that humans feel comfortable according to changes in an external environment. CONSTITUTION: A luminance generating part(21) converts color information of color-interpolated pixels into luminance. A plurality of luminance integrating parts(201a-201e) divide a screen into a plurality of areas including an interest area according to sampling sections for integrating the luminance according to the areas. A plurality of mean luminance calculating parts(202a-202e) calculate the mean luminance of each area. A plurality of abnormal luminance detecting parts(203a-203e) confirm whether the mean luminance of each area is in a normal area to remove abnormal luminance. A weight circuit part(204) adds weight to an output through the abnormal luminance detecting parts according to the interest area. A general mean luminance calculating part(205) calculates a general mean luminance. A plurality of luminance comparing parts(206a-206e) compare a separation luminance with reference luminances which are differences between the general mean luminance and a target luminance.
