PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compound-monitoring apparatus of an oil drum for accurately, quickly, and automatically discriminating the defects in the compound-coated state to the top board of the oil drum or an oil drum fuselage over the entire periphery while the oil drum is rotating speedily. SOLUTION: The apparatus for monitoring the compound for seam sealing that is applied to the circumferential end of the top board or the bottom board before seaming the oil drum, or the fuselage of the oil drum comprises a means for rotating the top board, the bottom board, or the fuselage, a means for detecting the shape of the compound during rotation by a laser sensor, and a means for automatically discriminating the defects in the compound based on the detected shape. The monitoring method uses the monitoring apparatus.
