PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an estimation method for the minimum mean plate thickness of a plate material in which the minimum mean plate thickness of the plate material, mainly the minimum mean plate thickness in a vertical cross section nearly at right angles to a direction generating a tensile stress, can be estimated with satisfactory accuracy and simply. SOLUTION: The estimation method is provided with a step in which a specific region A on the plate material 100 is decided, a step in which the plate thickness of the plate material 100 is measured at the same interval as a prescribed interval D along at least two lines 1 extended from one end ea to the other end eb of the specific region A and separated from each other at the prescribed interval D, a step in which the mean plate thickness tave of the whole of the specific region A calculated on the basis of all measured results, a step in which the mean plate thickness of each line 1 is calculated on the basis of the measured result of each line 1, a step in which a standard deviation 6 is calculated on the basis of the mean plate thickness tave of the whole of the specific region A and on the basis of the mean plate thickness of each line 1, and a step in which the mean plate thickness tave of the whole of the specific region A and the standard deviationσare substituted into a minimum mean plate thickness estimation expression of te =tave -α×σ[mm] and which calculates the minimum mean plate tave thickness te of the plate material 100.
