PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To embody a projection type display device equipped with a cooling mechanism which can efficiently cool respective parts in the device. SOLUTION: Air vents 804a and 808 are formed in the front of a lamp case 802 of a light source lamp unit 8 of the projection type display device 1 in the direction of the optical axis 1a and an outlet 807 is formed in the back; and the upper and lower, and right and left peripheral surfaces are substantially closed. An exhaust fan 16 is arranged behind them. A power unit 7 is fitted with an auxiliary suction fan 17 which forcibly introduces air into it. A 2nd air intake is formed in the upper wall of an exterior case corresponding to the position of a suction fan 15. At least a partial air flow introduced into the device by the suction fan flows into the lamp case along the optical axis and flows along its circumference, so inner parts such as a light source lamp and a reflector are efficiently cooled. The air is forcibly introduced into the power unit by the auxiliary suction fan to sufficiently cool the inside. Even if an air intake is clogged, sufficient air can be introduced from the 2nd auxiliary air intake, so the inner side can be always cooled sufficiently.
