PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vertical illuminator which uses a reflection plate made as simple as possible to secure a high luminance and illumination uniformity of an illuminated surface. SOLUTION: A simple shape of connecting groove-like reflection parts 21 is given to a reflection plate 2, and the height and the inclination angle of reflection slopes 23 of groove-like reflection parts 21 are set not only to supply direct rays for an illuminated surface 4 of a linear light source 3 disposed in each groove-like reflection part 21 to a wide-range incidence area extended up to the position above an adjacent linear light source 3 but also to supply light reflected from a horizontal reflection face 22 and the reflection slope 23 to an intermediate area c and a return area b of the illuminated surface 4, thus obtaining a high luminance and illumination uniformity of the illuminated surface 4.
