The present invention relates to an alkaline protease from Vibrio metschnikovii such as V. metschnikovii RH530 N-4-8 and strains derived therefrom (V. metschnikovii KS1, V. metschnikovii KS1 transformed with pDSBCm, V. metschnikovii KS1 transformed with pSBCm) and to a detergent composition including said protease. The claimed protease has a molecular weight in the range of 10000-300000, used azocasein as a substrate and has a pH optimum between pH 10-12 at a temperature of 40-50 DEG C.
