PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device which enables an organic EL back light to be efficiently transmitted to a liquid crystal display part and reduces the power consumption of the organic EL back light source. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device is provided with a liquid crystal display element 1 and an organic EL back light 2 constituted of organic EL elements. A plurality of light emitting segments 5 divided in positions corresponding to non-display part 4 between pixels 3 of the liquid crystal display element 1 are provided on a transparent substrate 6 to form the organic EL back light 2. Light reflection layers 7 are provided on parts other than the light emitting segments 5 of the transparent substrate 6. A transmission liquid crystal display element 1 using no reflection electrodes can be used as the liquid crystal display element 1, and the width of non-display parts 4 between pixels 3 can be reduced to give wide areas to display parts 8 which transmit light. Thus the efficiency of illumination for pixels 3 of liquid crystal is improved.
