PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mono-color liquid crystal display device always displaying bright color characters and color figures with a black background or, on the contrary, displaying black characters and black figures with a colorful color background by making a display recognizable in dark surroundings such as at night with backlight illumination. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device is provided with a TN (twisted nematic) liquid crystal element 7 constructed by sealing in a nearly 90 deg. twist aligned nematic liquid crystal 6 between a pair of transparent substrates 1, 2 respectively having transparent electrodes 3, 4. A first polarizing plate 17 is disposed on the viewer's side of the TN liquid crystal element 7. A second polarizing plate 18, a circularly polarizing optical retardation plate 9, a cholesteric liquid crystal polymer sheet 10, a semitransmissive light absorbing member 15 and a backlight 16 are disposed in this order on the side opposite to the viewer's side. Black and white relations in a display of a reflective state using external light and in a display of a transmissive state using the backlight 16 are made to be identical to each other. |
