PURPOSE: A method for calculating density of hydrocarbon contained in purge gas is provided to precisely calculate density of hydrocarbon formed in a combustion chamber of an engine by using an oxygen sensor. CONSTITUTION: First, it is determined whether a combustion process is carried out with a theoretical air/fuel ratio in an engine(200). If the combustion process is carried out with the theoretical air/fuel ratio, an amount of intake air introduced into a combustion chamber is read by using a map sensor(201). Then, an amount of fuel injected from an injector is calculated(202). After performing the combustion process with the calculated fuel injection rate(203), an oxygen signal is read from exhaust gas(204). Then, the theoretical air/fuel ratio is calculated by using an oxygen signal feedback gain(205). Then, it is determined whether a duty cycle of a control valve exceeds zero(206). If the duty cycle of the control valve exceeds zero, an amount of purge gas is calculated(207). After that, density of hydrocarbon contained in purge gas is calculated based on the amount of purge gas(208).
