The present invention relates to a recombinant carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA)/vaccinia virus or other viral vector which expresses GEA on the surface of infected cells and which elicits an immune response in vivo directed against CEA or cells ex- pressing CEA an d a pharmaceutical composition containing same. The inventio n also relates to methods of treating patients con- taining carcinoma cells in which CEA is expressed and methods of stimulating the immune system against CEA.
