PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an industrial method for producing an n-3-based docosapentaenoic acid which is 1 kind of n-3-based highly unsaturated fatty acids. SOLUTION: This method for producing the n-3-based docosapentaenoic acid is provided by accumulating the n-3-based docosapentaenoic acid in transformed cells or at the outside of the cells by the transformed cells obtained by introducing a chain-extension enzyme gene derived from a mammalian animal as an vector of an extrachromosomal expressing or intrachromosomal expressing plasmid into a host cells to perform the chain extension of eicosapentaenoic acid.
