PURPOSE: A method and an apparatus for controlling video output of a projection TV are provided to prevent an abnormal image from being displayed at an early stage by muting the original video output and displaying a specific image. CONSTITUTION: If a projection TV is turned on, power is supplied to a lamp(S1). A control device outputs a lighting control signal to the lamp and confirms whether a lamp lighting detecting signal is inputted(S2-S3). An LCD power supply control part supplies driving power to one LCD, for example, an LCD for blue. The control device confirms time required for emitting light of normal brightness after the lamp is switched into a lighted state(S5). A muting control device drives red and green signal muting devices except a blue signal muting device(S6). A blue-back screen is displayed until time required for emitting the light of normal brightness passes(S7). After time passes, the control device outputs a control signal to drive LCDs for red, green, and blue and to release muting by red, green, and blue muting devices(S8).
