PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the management cost and required storage space amount of a tape cartridge library. SOLUTION: During retrieval of tape cartridges (106) from a single cartridge interface, a planar portion (503) of a compression pad (421) is oriented such that a tape cartridge (106) is stopped during manual insertion from the single cartridge interface in position for selection and retrieval by a cartridge picker (102). During retrieval of tape cartridges (106) from all other locations, tape cartridges (106) contact a beveled portion (504) of a cartridge stop/compression pad (421) causing the cartridge stop/compression pad (421) to function as a compression pad and extend vertically upward to permit the cartridge (106) to be fully received into the cavity of the cartridge picker (102).
