PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control system for an internal combustion engine that can reduce degradation in the drivability of an engine. SOLUTION: The control system for an internal combustion engine comprises a leaning control means for calculating a torque allowance from a reference engine speed and an engine speed and leaning a combustion air-fuel ratio of the internal combustion engine according to the torque allowance. The fuel injection quantity correction by the leaning control means is subjected to a further fuel injection quantity correction according to a final correction value for reducing drivability degradation. As the final correction value set, a correction value for suppressing drivability is selected from a correction value set according to an engine speed variation and the preceding final correction value. The air-fuel ratio can be thus leaned in consideration of drivability degradation.
