PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an industrially suitable method for producing an alkali metal salt of aβ-oxonitrile derivative, by which the alkali metal salt of theβ-oxonitrile derivative can be obtained in a high yield and by a simple method. SOLUTION: This method for producing an alkali metal salt of an oxonitrile compound represented by the general formula (3) [wherein R<1> represents a group not participating in the reaction and R<3> represents an alkyl] comprises reacting a carboxylic ester represented by the general formula (1) [wherein R<1> and R<2> each represents a group not participating in the reaction; provided that R<2> is not hydrogen] with a nitrile compound represented by the general formula (2) [wherein R<3> is the same as defined above] and a base at 145 to 300 deg.C in a closed vessel.
