PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an olefin-aromatic vinyl compound copolymer having a conventional statistical monomer chain distribution, especially a new olefin- aromatic vinyl compound copolymer improving disadvantages of an ethylene- aromatic vinyl compound copolymer, especially the new ethylene-aromatic vinyl compound copolymer and an efficient method for producing the copolymer. SOLUTION: This method for producing a copolymer or a copolymer composition comprises using a polymerization catalyst composed of a transition metal compound capable of affording structural transition between the SP2 structure and the SP3 structure and a promoter. The method for producing the copolymer or copolymer composition comprises using a polymerization catalyst composed of the transition metal compound represented by the general formula (1) and the promoter. The olefin-aromatic vinyl compound copolymer or olefin-aromatic vinyl compound copolymer composition is obtained by the method.
