PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an accurate, inexpensive encoder for eliminating the need for later adjustment. SOLUTION: The encoder comprises a magnetic disk 2 that is fixed to a shaft 1 of a rotor, magnetoresistive elements 41-44 that are provided near the magnetic disk, and a single base 3 having fixing sections 31-34 for mounting at least two magnetoresistive elements, thus detecting the rotational angle of the rotor. An element reference surface is provided at the substrate of the magnetoresistive elements, the base is set to be nearly in a cylindrical shape, the fixing section for fixing the magnetoresistive elements is set in a square recess at the inner periphery section, a base reference surface is provided on the side of the recess, and the element reference surface of the detection element is matched to the base reference surface for fixation.
