PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal composition exhibiting a high order parameter, and to provide a liquid crystal element. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal composition contains a coupled compound having a structure which contains >=1 of substituent expressed by general formula (1), and >=2 of chromophores connected via covalent bonds. General formula (1). (Het)m (B<1> )p (Q<1> )q (B<2> )r }n C<1> (wherein, Het is NR, S or O, and R is H or the like; B<1> and B<2> are each a divalent aryl, heteroaryl or cyclic aliphatic hydrocarbon group; Q<1> is a divalent coupling group; C<1> is an alkyl or the like; and m is 0 or 1, p, q and r are each an integer of 0-5, and n is an integer of 1-3, but (p+r)×n is 2-10). The liquid crystal element uses the composition.
